A food chain is a series of organisms that are each dependant on the next set of organisms for food.

The 10% rule shows how energy is transferred. It says that the predator only gains about 10% if its' preys energy. So a consumer would only get 10% of energy from a producer who could start with 100% energy.

Decomposers break down dead animals and plants into matter that eventually becomes apart of the soil. Common decomposers include bacteria, mushrooms, and worms.

A consumer is an organism that cannot make its' own food and has to feed on other animals and plants. The three different types of consumers are herbivores, carnivores, and obnivores. Primary consumers eat producers, sedcondary consumers eat primary consumers, and tertiary consumers eat secondary consumers.

Plants are at the bottom of the food chain. They are called producers. They  produce their own food by using light energy from the sun and converting it into glucose and oxygen through photosynthesis.
