Meiosis is a form of cell division that occurs in gamete-producing cells which are diploid cells that undergo two cell divisions forming four haploid cells having half the number of chromosomes as the orginal parent cell.

Meiosis allows for rapid generation of new geneic combinations. There are three key contributions to this process including independant assortment, crossing-over, and random fertilization. Meiosis gives rise to random fertilization which ultimately offers genetic diversity and variation. In all, Meiosis increases genetic variation.
